February 7, 2016The full project is 85% complete, target delivery by May 2016
Elevated U-turns will replace ground level U-turns which have been the cause of hundreds of accidents a year
Kuwait, February 7, 2016: Mushrif Trading and Contracting Company (MTCC:KW), a Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) listed company, today delivered the first of four elevated U-turns along the Nuwaiseeb road to the Ministry of Public Works (MPW).
The KD 5.8 million two-year contract was awarded to Mushrif in June 2014. Ground was broken on the four elevated U-turns at the beginning of February 2015 and as of today, Mushrif has achieved 85% completion of the entire project, with the last of the elevated U-turns scheduled for delivery by May 2016.
The MPW had launched the tender for the elevated U-turns owing to more than 160 fatalities caused by the existing, ground-level U-turns in 2013 according to the Kuwait Central Statistical Bureau (KCSB). Attending the hand over, Engineer Ahmad Al-Hassan, Assistant Undersecretary for Road Engineering Affairs at the Ministry of Public Works indicated the initiative to build elevated U-turns aims to improve safety along the Nuwaiseeb road.
Mushrif Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chris Preece, said: “This is a significant undertaking by MPW and we are honoured to have been chosen to construct the elevated U-turns on the Nuwaiseeb Highway, which will have a direct impact on reducing the number of fatal accidents on the highway.”
The 120 km/hour Nuwaiseeb highway starts at the intersection of the King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz road (40) with the Abdulaziz Bin Abdel Rahman Al Saud road (30) and extends all the way to the Saudi Arabian border. The road serves the seaside developments in the area such as Kharian Resort, Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) New Refinery Project (NRP) (Al Zour Refinery), as well as traffic between the State of Kuwait and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In addition to the construction of the elevated U-turns, the contract also includes service maintenance for two years.
